An annular ring is the area on the pad that surrounds a through via. The width of these rings can affect your design and manufacturing considerations. Annular rings can indicate the reliability of your HDI manufacturer based on the precision of the drills creating the vias.
PCB Minimum Annular Ring
Printed Circuit Board (PCB) minimum annular ring refers to the minimum amount of copper between the edge of the land and the edge of the hole, after the finished hole is plated. It is also referred to as a supported hole. Sometimes, the traces on a circuit board are required to be connected to another layer. In such cases, the traces end up on a pad. The via on the pad helps the trace to move from that pad and connect the other layer. The area on the pad, which surrounds the via is referred to as annular ring. It is very crucial to have a proper setting of the annular ring in the PCB layout software. This helps maintain proper spacing of copper. A copper ring attached to the surface of a pad around a connecting hole wall. Drill size (Aperture) is the the size of the hole diameter.
An Annular Ring Width = (diameter of the pad – diameter of the hole) / 2
Normally Min width for Annular Ring is 0.15mm(6mil).
Drill Sizes (CNC): 0.2-6.3mm.(Min drill size is 0.2mm, max drill is 6.3mm. Any holes greater than 6.3mm or smaller than 0.3mm will be subject to extra charges)
Eg: 1. R=0.12mm H=0.2MM D=0.44MM
The Annular Ring Width=(0.44-0.2)/2=0.12mm
2. R=0.15mm H=0.3MM D=0.6MM
The Annular Ring Width=(0.6-0.3)/2=0.15mm
