DEFINITION OF CASTELLATED HOLES
Castellated features are vias or thru holes that are cut through to create a partial or half hole for the purpose of creating an opening into the side of the hole barrel. These partial features are used for the purpose of mounting a PCB to another PCB by means of solder, or insertion of specially design edge connectors. There are multiple designs that constitute a feature that would fall under the castellation format.
What is castellation PCB?
When daughter circuit board need to be welded on mother circuit board,The electrically connected is not good if use round hole welded daughter circuit board to mother circuit board , because the hole size is large and cold welding questions.So there is castellation hole, castellation hole of the printed circuit board edge has the same hole conduction function, but also can make use castellation holes welded and fixed, the surface pad of mother circuit board can be directly welded with castellation hole.
What are castellated holes used for?
Castellated holes can be used for a couple of different reasons. Most commonly, they are used by designers to create PCB modules, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth modules, which will then be used as an independent part to be placed onto another board during the PCB assembly process. However, castellations are also used when combining two boards to ensure the solder inspection joint is properly structured and to create wireless PCB to PCB links.

Depending on the need and final use of the board there are some design attributes that need to be met. For example:
· Size: It is recommended to use the largest possible size.
· Surface finish: Depends on the final use of the board, but ENIG is recommended.
· OL pad design: It is recommended to use the largest possible OL pad on top and bottom.
· Number of holes: This depends on the design; however, it is known that the less number of holes, the more difficult the PCB Assembly process will be.
